Diamond Princess cruise ship coronavirus outbreak

One of the most prolific and widely publicised cases of the coronavirus has been the Diamond Princess cruise ship. On 3rd February 2020, the Diamond Princess cruise reported an outbreak of the coronavirus, which had spread to 619 confirmed cases by 20th February 2020. The Diamond Princess cruise ship was docked at Yokohama, Japan under quarantine, but Princess cruise liner has stated that all passengers have disembarked by the 27th February 2020.

As you will be aware, there has been considerable media coverage of the coronavirus which has in turn led to uncertainty within the cruise and travel industry, with some holidaymakers feeling dissuaded by the prospect of international travel. Unless the FCDO advises against travel to a specific area or country, your cruise travel insurance policy will remain valid and you can continue with your holiday plans as normal.

How to protect yourself against coronavirus

At this current stage there are no known cures for COVID-19, so to reduce chances of infection you can follow several basic hygeine methods which can easily be incorporated into your day-to-day routine to reduce chances of contracting the virus:

  • Regular hand washing
  • Covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
  • Thoroughly cooking meat and eggs
  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illnesses
