Terminal 5 is the newest addition to Heathrow Airport and is the largest free-standing structure in the UK. The terminal was built and designed to handle a whopping 35 million passengers a year.
British Airways have the most presence at Heathrow Terminal 5, boasting an extremely long list of destinations, including a number of locations across the UK, Europe and Long-Haul. Iberia also use the terminal but have adapted their flight numbers to be the same as BA.

Traffic: The amount of traffic to and from Heathrow departures Terminal 5 became so substantial that a dedicated motorway spur was built linking it to the M25, thus making it extremely accessible. The terminal also has its own train station linking it to the London Underground and Heathrow Express rail networks. The journey in and out of London are very fast and frequent. You can be in Paddington, (Central London) in just 21 minutes. Alternatively the Piccadilly Line on the London Underground, although slower with a journey time of 45 minutes, is a much cheaper option.

Heathrow airport advises that you arrive for check-in at least three hours before long-haul and El Al flights, two hours before European flights and 90 minutes before flights within the UK and Ireland though wed probably advise making that two hours too.
Self-service check-in where you check yourself in, choose your seat and print your boarding card at a computer before dropping your bags off is available with the following airlines: Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Gulf Air, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, SAS, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.
Online check-in where you choose your seat and print your boarding pass online before you arrive at the airport is available with the following airlines: Air France, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, KLM, Lufthansa, SAS, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Swiss, Turkish Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. In addition, American Airlines, British Airways and Lufthansa offer mobile check-in with some phones.
The check-in desks are on the first floor in terminals 1 and 4, the ground floor in terminal 3 and the top floor of terminal 5.
Your baggage allowance, both for hand luggage and for hold baggage, will be determined by your airline, so check with them to see how much youre allowed to take. Theres more information, including a list of items not allowed in hand luggage, here.

There are set-down lanes outside all four terminals where you can drop passengers off, but you cant park. If youre picking passengers up, you should wait in the Short-Stay car parks.
