Travel Insurance for Disabled People

At Holiday Extras, we believe everyone deserves to explore the world with confidence. Our travel insurance is designed to provide protection and support, so you can focus on enjoying your trip, not worrying about what-ifs.

We don't offer a separate disabled travel insurance policy because we believe travel protection should be inclusive. When you get a quote, you'll be asked about any existing medical conditions or disabilities. Sharing this information ensures your policy includes the right level of cover for your circumstances. We provide both single-trip and annual policies designed to fit around your plans and budget. Choose from three cover levels, bronze, silver and gold, to suit your needs.

Declaring a disability or health condition

When you get a quote, we'll ask about any medical conditions or health-related circumstances that could affect your trip or your ability to travel. If you have a disability, you don't need a separate policy, but it's important to tell us about any health conditions linked to your disability, or if you take regular medication, treatment, or mobility aids that could be affected by travel.

This helps make sure we can cover you if you need to make a claim.

What you'll need to declare:

You should tell us if you or anyone on your policy:

  • Has a diagnosed medical condition that requires ongoing treatment or check-ups.
  • Uses medical or mobility equipment that would need replacing if lost or damaged while travelling.
  • Has been recently referred for tests, investigations, or awaiting a diagnosis.

Please note that mobility or medical equipment is only covered if it's owned by you. Items that are borrowed, rented, or supplied by the NHS or another organisation aren't covered.

We'll then confirm whether we can offer cover based on the information you've provided. Always check our policy documents before you purchase for a full breakdown of what needs to be declared, and remember that cover is subject to policy terms and conditions.

If you don't declare your medical conditions, and you need medical treatment or advice while on your trip, you will be responsible for all the medical costs, and you won't be able to submit a claim.

Changes to your health or mobility needs

If anything changes after you buy or renew your policy, such as a new diagnosis, change in medication, or update to your health or mobility needs, please let us know as soon as possible.

We'll ask a few questions to check whether:

  • your cover can continue with no change to your premium;
  • your premium needs to be adjusted; or
  • your policy needs to be updated or replaced.

If you've already booked a trip and your circumstances change, please check the cancellation section of your policy for guidance.

Even if your doctor has confirmed you're fit to travel, it's still best to let us know, your cover may be affected if your health or mobility needs have changed since your policy started.

Travelling with a carer or companion

If you're travelling with a carer, support worker or companion, you can add everyone to the same policy. This helps if you need to cancel or cut your trip short for a covered reason.

If you book separately, make sure your travel arrangements line up and everyone has the same trip dates and destination on their policy.

Travel advice: How to prepare for your trip when you have a disability

Before you book anything, make a list of your individual needs: Ensure you research your destinations and accommodation fully to make sure they are suitable.

See your doctor four to six weeks before you travel: It's useful to discuss your condition and whether or not you need to complete a Medical Information Form or a Frequent Travellers' Medical Card (FREMEC).

Organise car hire before you go: If you want to hire a car, the Blue Badge Scheme now operates throughout some European countries. Make sure you discuss your needs and the insurance offered by the car hire company well in advance. And familiarise yourself with the laws of the road and licence requirements in your destination.

Carry medication in your hand luggage
Bring enough for your trip, allowing for delays, and keep medicines in the original packaging. Carry a list of your prescribed medicines or ask for a letter from your doctor and check out the latest security and baggage restrictions. It's also worth finding out the names of your medication in the country you're visiting and how you can get medical help while you're away.

If you are in need of emergency medical attention, please make sure you call local emergency services before anything else.

Use Reciprocal Health Agreements

If your destination has a health agreement with the UK, you can use your EHIC or GHIC card to access medical treatment. This may help cover some or all of your medical expenses.

Contact the Assistance Team

If you're admitted to hospital, call our assistance team as soon as possible.

When to Call: After you've been admitted but before paying for any medical treatment.

Why It's Important: Not contacting the team could limit your coverage, even if your claim is valid.
