Singapore Travel Advice

Tipping - Singapore is one of the few cities in which tipping is discouraged, even frowned upon by the government. Singaporeans believe good service should come with the price of the meal and that by tipping, one is suggesting they didn't expect to receive quality service. It's viewed as very insulting to tip, so just save you change for the vending machines.

Mind your manners - Singapore is one of the cleanest cities in the world for a reason. It's technically illegal to spit, litter, jay walk, eat or drink on public transport, and laws are stringently enforced. Even selling chewing gum is illegal unless it's for medical reasons. Breaking any of these rules could land you with a hefty fine.

Brunei Dollars - Don't be surprised if you find a few Brunei dollars in your change. Both the Singapore and Brunei dollar can be used in both countries.

Transport - perhaps the quickest and cheapest way to get around the city is to use the MRT line. It costs around 12 singaporean dollars to take out an MRT travel card, (7 dollars travel credit and a 5 dollar deposit which you get back upon returning the card)

Places to visit and things to try in Singapore

Hawker centers - no trip to Singapore would be complete without a visit to one of the famous hawker centers. For those that haven't heard of them, hawker centres in Singapore are basically year round food festivals. Here you'll find quality cuisine from all over asia, for no more than a few singaporean dollars.

Sentosa Island - Take the cable car or monorail over to this tropical island resort and enjoy the sunshine and palm trees and tranquil stretches of beach. Be sure to take a trip up Tiger Sky Tower, for panoramic views that stretch as far as Indonesia.

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum - Built to house the tooth relic of the historical Buddha, this Tang dynasty inspired temple is a popular attraction in the heart of Singapore's Chinatown. Get there by 11:00am to observe the traditional ceremony.
