Can I get travel insurance if I have asthma?

Before you travel, we recommend checking the NHS website for guidance on travelling with asthma, to help you decide whether it’s the right time for you to travel. It can be possible to get travel insurance if you have asthma, but you will need to make sure that all conditions are accurately declared on your policy. Some providers may exclude coverage for asthma, and whether you can be covered by us may depend on how you answer your medical questions. You should never travel against medical advice or if your doctor has told you not to.

Is asthma classed as a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, asthma is classed as a pre-existing medical condition when it comes to insurance and it must be declared when you take out a policy. It is important to declare your condition accurately to help ensure you are properly covered. If you choose not to declare a condition such as asthma, then you will not be covered in the unfortunate event of a related medical emergency abroad. Your entire policy could also be made invalid.

What are the benefits of buying a Holiday Extras insurance policy?

  • Flexible cover levels - Pick from bronze, silver or gold policies to suit your trip plans and budget, whether you are going all out or keeping things simple.

  • Extra cover, if you want it - Add ons are available for things such as gadget protection and winter sports so you can tailor your policy to your plans.
  • Award winning protection - We have been voted Best Insurance Provider for 16 years in a row.

What our customers are saying about us

How do I declare my condition?

Declaring your asthma is a simple matter of completing our travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions online screening process when booking your travel insurance. You will be asked a number of questions related to your condition so we can determine if we are able to provide you with cover. This helps us offer appropriate travel insurance for asthma based on your personal circumstances.

Can I fly with asthma?

Many people with asthma are able to fly, especially when their condition is well managed. However, if your symptoms have recently changed, you have had a severe asthma attack, or your medication has been adjusted, you should speak to your doctor before you book or travel. Your doctor is best placed to advise you on whether flying is suitable for you.

If you are unsure about how your asthma is currently controlled, it is always safest to seek medical advice before making travel plans.

Tips for travelling with asthma

Plan your journey - Allow extra time at each stage of your journey so you do not feel rushed and can take breaks if you need them.

Use smart luggage solutions - Using suitcases with wheels or arranging special assistance at the airport can help reduce physical strain that might make you short of breath.

Check your destination - Be aware of places with extreme temperatures, high levels of pollution, very high altitude or high pollen counts, as these can sometimes make asthma symptoms worse.

Medication - Take enough medication to last for your entire trip, plus a little extra. Bring an up to date list of all medicines you take, along with doses and the generic and brand names of each medicine. If you need to take inhalers or other medication into the cabin, you may need a note from your doctor.
