Travel tips if you're travelling with fibromyalgia

Travelling abroad with a chronic pain condition can cause conflicting emotions. It's exciting to think about spending time with the family and in new places, making new memories and having new experiences. However, the change in weather, a new mattress or having to sit for long periods of time, can all complicate your experience and take the joy of a holiday away from you. Unfortunately, even though you are taking time out, your fibromyalgia won't - so proper management of your condition whilst you're away is extremely important.

Follow our simple top tips for stress-free travel that allows you to enjoy less hassle and more holiday.

  • Plan your trip - Gather as much research as you can on where you're travelling to. Take a camera and create great memories. Then on your return you can remember all of the happy times.
  • Have all your medication ready - Make sure you have the medications and vitamins you need before you travel so that you don't get caught short. Find out more about travelling with medication.
  • Prepare for a comfortable night's sleep - You may think bringing an extra pillow or sheet could help. Pack the items you know will make your sleep pattern easier abroad.
  • Don't be embarrassed to ask for help - You may need a room with a shower only, or a room close to an elevator. Whatever you feel will help - don't be afraid to ask for it.
  • Don't seize up - Make sure that if you're travelling a lot by train or car that you take time out to do your stretches. If you are on a plane, take a walk up the aisle and do some arm or neck stretches. You can wiggle your toes or do stretches in your seat. Just don't allow yourself to seize up.
  • Get enough sleep - Listen to your body and get the right amount of rest and sleep that you need. Don't cut short your rest time, use this as your time to relax and enjoy your holiday.
  • Take good care of your feet - Wear a good pair of shoes (flip-flops probably isn't the best choice). make sure your feet are nice and comfortable when you're walking about.
  • Pick the best foods for you - Try not to be too adventurous with your foods because an upset stomach is the last thing you need. Enjoy your food, but be careful with what you order and be sure to drink lots of water.
  • Pace your adventure - Don't expect to see everything in a day. Take it at the pace that is best for you and don't push yourself too hard. Allow yourself plenty of time to truly enjoy your trip.
