Diphtheria, Polio, Tetanus (combined booster) vaccination for travel (Td-IPV)

This combined booster shot treats Diphtheria, Polio, and Tetanus, and is recommended for anyone, particularly if you are travelling to an area where these diseases are common. The 3-in-1 booster jab is routinely offered on the NHS to all young people. However, if you did not have the vaccination you should speak with your GP about getting the vaccination.

What are Diphtheria, Polio, and Tetanus?

Diphtheria is a bacteria-based disease that is spread from person to person. It results in fever, swollen neck glands, and eventually causes a thick coating to form in the nose and throat. The toxins that this mucus produces can kill the cells in the respiratory system and is fatal in 10% of untreated cases.

Polio is spread through the faeces of someone who is already infected. It is most common in areas with poor sanitation and is highly contagious. The vaccination can prevent a person from contracting polio, but there is no cure. It weakens muscles and can cause paralysis and even death.

Tetanus is a bacteria-based disease that is found in the environment and is contracted through puncture wounds. It causes severe muscle spasms and can affect your breathing and even cause death. Like polio, there is no cure, but symptoms can be managed successfully until recovery.

What is the Diphtheria, Polio, and Tetanus vaccine?

The Diphtheria, Polio, and Tetanus vaccine is a combination 3-in-1 vaccination that protects against these three diseases. You need a total of five doses of this vaccination, given as part of other combination vaccinations you likely received throughout childhood. If ten years have passed since you last received this vaccination, you will need a booster shot before travelling.

How long does the Diphtheria, Polio, and Tetanus vaccine last?

This vaccine lasts approximately ten years after the initial dose. Afterwards, you will need a booster shot to remain protected from these three diseases. To be extra secure, get the right travel insurance to cover you in the rare case you do contract these diseases or any other disease while you are abroad.

What are the side effects of Diphtheria, Polio and Tetanus vaccine?

The most common side effects from this 3-in-1 vaccine are injection soreness. This will go away without any medical intervention.
