Long Stay Travel Insurance
Are you planning a longer getaway or even a once-in-a-lifetime backpacking trip? Whatever your plans are, it's always a good idea to get reliable travel insurance. Travel insurance helps protect you financially if something unexpected happens on your trip – like lost bags, cancelled holidays or medical emergencies. Whether you are going away for 3 months or 18 months, travel without worry.
What is long stay travel insurance?
When it comes to long-stay travel insurance, there are a few options available. If you are looking for travel insurance for 90-days, then our single-trip policy may be suitable for you. Single-tip insurance allows you to travel for up to 365 days under one policy. It's good to bear in mind that this type of insurance is only suitable for those taking one continuous trip and not looking to return to the UK. Take a look at our page dedicated to single-trip insurance for more information.
For those looking for a policy that covers trips lasting longer than a year, a backpacker policy may be an option for you. Backpacker policies will cover you for trips lasting up to 550 days - that's almost 18 months of travel. With the Backpacker policy, you also have the option to return home at least once during your period of cover. This can be for any reason you choose, like attending a family event or even if you just feel a little homesick. For more details, take a look at our backpacker travel insurance page.
What kind of trips might long-stay insurance be good for?
- Backpacking trips
- Longer holidays or sabbaticals
- Gap years
- Spending winter in the sun
- Visiting family
Can I travel to multiple destinations with long stay cover?
Yes, all of our policies will allow you to travel to multiple destinations. You just need to make sure you have selected the correct destination level for your trip to be covered.
To check which destination group your trip comes under, use our handy destination checker.
Is there an age limit for long-stay travel?
Whilst there's no limit on long stay travel specifically, our policies types do have their own age limits:
- Single Trip policy - no upper age limit
- Annual policy - maximum age 85 years old
- Backpacker - maximum age 64 years old
- Emergency Medical Cover - If you fall ill or are injured, you can focus on your recovery, secure in the knowledge that we'll cover your medical expenses.
- Trip Curtailment - Having to cut short your holiday is never nice, let alone the sting of a financial loss. With our cover, you can be rest assured that cover for curtailment is in place should you unexpectantly fall ill and be forced to return home.
- Personal Possession cover - Personal possessions cover protects your belongings against loss, theft or damage, so the items that matter the most to you can be replaced or reimbursed.
Cover is subject to the terms and conditions of your policy and the authorisation of our emergency medical assistance team.
Can I get long stay travel insurance if I have medical conditions?
Yes, as long as we are able to insure you and your conditions, there won't be any restrictions on the length of your trip.
When purchasing travel insurance, you will be asked a few questions about your health and any conditions will need to be declared. This is to ensure you have the right level of cover for your trip. You can simply do this online or over the phone. You can find more information on our page dedicated to travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions.
