Storm Amy: yellow/amber warnings & travel guidance

The Met Office has issued yellow wind and rain warnings from Friday evening (Oct 3) into Saturday (Oct 4) for Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England. In exposed coasts and higher ground, gusts may reach 70–80 mph, with a risk of debris and difficult travel. Some ferry, rail and air services may be delayed or cancelled.

High winds & heavy rain

Most affected areas (indicative): Highlands & Islands, western and northern coasts, Irish Sea routes, parts of Cumbria and Northumberland.

What to do now
  • Check your flight/train/ferry status before you set off, and again on arrival at the terminal.
  • Build in extra time getting to the airport or station; crosswinds and spray can slow road traffic.
  • Keep essentials in hand luggage: meds, ID, chargers, snacks, warm/waterproof layers.

Current disruptions

  • Most domestic flights between Glasgow and the Scottish islands, and flights between the English, Scottish and Irish airports, were cancelled on Saturday morning and some disruptions persist through the day
  • Amsterdam Schiphol is returning to normal after severe disruptions from the storm this morning
  • There are amber warnings in place for the north-west coast of Scotland, and for the north-west coast of Ireland. Please take extra care travelling in those areas and look out for travel advice from local authorities
  • Unrelated to the storm, but there appear to be some knock-on delays and cancellations at Munich airport after a drone sighting overnight
