Who's eligible for cover?

Before getting your Backpacker policy, check that you're eligible for cover:

  • You're currently in the United Kingdom when buying your policy.
  • Your trip begins and ends in the UK, and it hasn't already started.
  • You have a UK address, have lived in the UK for at least six of the past twelve months, and are registered with a General Practitioner in the UK.
  • You'll be aged 64 or under at the start of your policy.

How long am I covered for?

Our Backpacker policies are designed for extended adventures, giving you the freedom to explore the world at your own pace. You'll be covered for trips lasting up to 550 days in total – that's around 18 months of travel time.

Whether you're planning a round–the–world journey, a gap year or an extended stay abroad, your cover will start from the date shown on your policy and continue until you return home to the UK, as long as your trip doesn't exceed the maximum duration.

Countries we cover

It's important to make sure your destination is included in your cover. The area you're insured for will be shown on your policy schedule.

Want to check before you buy?

You can use our destination checker to confirm your chosen country is covered before you purchase your insurance. You should always check the latest FCDO travel advice before booking or travelling to make sure your destination is safe and eligible for cover as well.

Pre-existing medical conditions and changes to your health

It's important that you tell us about any pre-existing medical conditions and any changes to your health – even after you've taken out your policy. You need to update us as soon as there's a change, as not declaring it could affect your cover or make your policy null and void if you need to make a claim.

To make sure you're fully protected, find out more about travel insurance for medical conditions.
