Fuerteventura Airport Car Hire - rules of the road**

Being part of Spain, the roads are pretty similar to mainland Spain, but minus any motorways. There are only two main roads on the island: FV-1 linking the capital, Puerto Rosario to Corralejo and FV-2 linking Puerto Rosario to Morro Jable in the south. So you're very unlikely to encounter any problems driving a hire car from Fuerteventura airport. But we've put together the following information, giving you the lowdown on the rules of the road.

    Handy Driving Hints

    • Left hand drive vehicles - Drive on the right, overtake on the left.
    • Minimum car hire age - 18 years old. Under 25's may have to pay a young driver surcharge.
    • Seatbelt - Under Spanish law, all car occupants must wear a seatbelt.
    • Children under 12 or under 1.35m - Cannot travel in the front of a car, unless they are seated in a specially adapted rear-facing child seat.
    • Unleaded petrol - Sin plomo 98 or Eurosuper 95.
    • Diesel - gasoleo.
    • Leaded - super/super 97.
    • Petrol stations - Garages are rarely open 24 hours (particularly outside of urban areas). There are a number of service stations located along the main roads. Petrol stations can often for 2 hours at lunchtime to avoid the real heat of the day, as well as all day on Sundays. They tend not to be self-service and you will need to tell the assistant how much fuel you require.
    • Toll Roads - There aren't any of these in Fuerteventura.

    Spanish roads

Roundabouts - Remember to navigate them in an anticlockwise direction. Unlike the UK, as traffic in the outside lane has right of way. It may be confusing to find drivers going all the way around a roundabout in the outside lane, even if they are leaving at the 3rd or 4th exit. You just need to make sure you are in the outside lane at the point you want to leave the roundabout.

Slip Roads - Slip roads onto main roads and dual carriage ways tend to be shorter than in the UK, so be prepared to have to stop, as traffic doesn't have to let you filter in.

Right turns onto a road - When you turn right from one road to another, you need to give way to any on coming traffic turning left into the same road. To help you remember this, there are markings on the road indicating where you need to let the car turning left through.

    Road safety laws

    Speed limits

    • Dual carriageways - 100kph/62mph
    • Out of town roads - 80kph/49mph
    • Built up areas - 50kph/31mph
    • Residential areas - 20kph/12mph

    On-the-spot fines

Fixed and mobile speed cameras are commonplace throughout Spain and tend to be more discreet than in the UK. If caught, Spanish authorities can issue on-the-spot fines.

All on-the-spot fines must be paid in cash, to the arresting officer. Credit cards and travellers cheques will not be accepted. Cash must be in the local currency and if you don't have sufficient to pay the fine, you will be escorted to the nearest ATM by the police to withdraw the necessary funds.

    Drinking and driving

Spanish authorities have clamped down massively on drink driving and laws are much stricter than in the UK. Severe penalties are imposed if the driver is found to have 0.05% or more alcohol in their blood, or 0.03% or more alcohol in the bloodstream if the driver has had a full licence for 2 years or less.

It is important to note that drinking alcohol and then driving may invalidate your car rental insurance, irrespective of local drink driving laws. Check your policy for full details.

    Driving licence

Important Information - Changes to the UK Driving Licence

In general, UK licences are accepted in other EU countries, however, if you are travelling to Spain, we recommend that you obtain an International Driver's Permit (IDP) as a precaution.

    Brexit

Yes, we had to mention that word! With all the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and to read our our latest travel advice, which includes driving in the EU, check out our Brexit Blog.

    Mobile phone use

It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving or in control of a vehicle in Spain, even if you have pulled over to the side of the road. Only fully-hands free units are permitted.

    Spanish driving etiquette

Flashing headlights - If another driver is flashing their headlights at you they are requesting you to give them right of way.

No honking your horn - It is illegal to beep someone in urban areas in Spain, and could result in an on-the-spot fine. You are only permitted to use your horn in an emergency.

**This information should be considered as a broad overview of things to remember when hiring a car. It is therefore very important that you read the rental terms and conditions and associated policies for your own specific policy as well as doing your own research into the motoring laws of the country in which you will be driving.
