Driving in Barcelona**

Driving abroad can seem a daunting prospect, so we've put together the following useful information to give you the low-down on speed limits and driving laws in Barcelona:

  • Left hand drive - Drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left.
  • Minimum age for car hire - Drivers must be at least 25 years of age and have held a full licence for at least 3 years.
  • Seatbelt - Spanish law requires all car occupants to wear a seatbelt.
  • Travelling with children - Children under 12 and measuring less than 135cm must travel in the back of a vehicle, unless the appropriate car seat/restraint is fitted.
  • Petrol stations - Some petrol stations require you to pay in advance before use, particularly at night time. Self-service stations will often have multilingual pump settings, allowing you to see instructions in English.
  • Use of mobile phones - It is illegal to use a mobile phone in Barcelona while driving. If you are caught using a mobile phone whilst at the wheel, you could be liable for a hefty fine. Hands-free devices that do not have headphones or earphones are permitted.

Road Safety Laws in Spain

Speed limits

  • Motorways - 120kph/74mph
  • Out of town/rural roads - 90kph/56mph
  • Urban areas - 50kph/31mph
  • Residential zones (where indicated) - 20kph/12mph

Always stick to the speed limits, as the Spanish police can issue fines for going as little as 1kph over the limit.

On-the-spot fines

The local police in Spain often issue on-the-spot fines. Visitors must pay these immediately, otherwise their vehicle may be impounded.

Fixed and mobile speed cameras are commonplace throughout Spain and in Barcelona. If you are caught speeding, then you will be liable for an on-the-spot fine.

Drinking and driving

Drink drive laws are strict in Barcelona and in Spain as a whole. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05% and 0.03% for those who have held a full driving licence for 2 years or less. Police have the authority to stop anyone for a random breathalyser test, or a saliva test if they suspect you are under the influence of drugs.

It is important to note that drinking alcohol or taking drugs and then driving may invalidate your car rental insurance, irrespective of local drink driving laws. Check your policy for full details.

Driving licence

Important Information - Changes to the UK Driving Licence

In general, UK licences are accepted in other EU countries, however, if you are travelling to Spain, we recommend that you obtain an International Driver's Permit (IDP) as a precaution.

Driving Safely in Spain

Joining a dual carriageway or motorway - It can sometimes be tricky to merge into traffic from an entry slip-road in Barcelona. You may have to stop at the end of the slip road and wait for a space in the traffic.

Flashing headlights - If another driver is flashing their headlights at you, they are requesting you give them right of way.

Use of horns - In urban areas it is illegal to use your horn. If you do so, you could incur an on-the-spot fine. Horns are only permitted in an emergency and you are advised to flash your lights instead.

Headlights - Dipped headlights must be used in poor visibility conditions during the day as well as at night.

Parking - It is prohibited to park within 5m of a bend or junction. Blue parking zones known as Zona Azul or Zona ORA are indicated by signs. You can usually park in them for a maximum of 2 hours during the day, but there is no restriction overnight between 8.00 pm and 8.00 am.

**This information should be considered as a broad overview of things to remember when hiring a car. It is therefore very important that you read the rental terms and conditions and associated policies for your own specific policy as well as doing your own research into the motoring laws of the country in which you will be driving.
