How to help, and advice for travellers

Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria

How you can help

Last updated: Noon Feb 6

As you've probably seen on the news, an earthquake hit Türkiye and Syria last night, and a state of emergency is ongoing in the area.

Holiday Extras has donated £10,000 to Oxfam's emergency relief fund, and if you can help we encourage you to consider contributing too.

Advice for travellers

While the earthquake is primarily a humanitarian disaster for the people affected, we understand that if your travel plans included Türkiye and Syria you will want to know whether it is still safe and responsible to contimue with those plans.

You should consult the FCDO advice for Türkiye and Syria and follow the recommendations there. Our understanding is that non-essential travel to the region of south-eastern Türkiye directly affected is not currently recommended, but that travel to most of Türkiye, including to Istanbul and the major tourist resorts, will continue as normal.

Other ongoing travel disruptions

Widespread and general strikes in France on Tues Jan 31 disrupted airports and public transport. French unions are expected to strike again on Feb Tues 7 and Feb Sat 11.

Strikes are disrupting travel to some but not all Spanish airports on Mon Feb 6 and each subsequent Monday until Feb 27 (unless a negotiated settlement is reached). Trips to some airports in Spain may therefore be affected on those days, please check with your airline.

FlyBe announced on Saturday Jan 28 that the airline was closing down, and cancelled all its flights. If your travel plans have been disrupted by FlyBe's closure and you have a booking with us, we're here to help.

By now you've probably made other arrangements for the trip you were planning to take with FlyBe. It's easy to change your extras with us too, and with Flextras you can make changes free of charge with a few clicks.

How to change your booking

  1. If you haven't already travelled you can make changes your booking.
  2. Take a look at what to do if you're away and need to change your parking.

How to cancel your booking

  1. If you haven't done so already, log in to your account.
  2. Look for 'Your trips and bookings'.
  3. Tap the booking you want to amend.
  4. Select 'Cancel Booking' from the list.

You can still follow this process if your booking is non-amendable or inside 24 hours of your arrival date, to arrange a cancellation invoice for a travel insurance claim.
