Information on Tourist Protests in Southern Europe
Tourist Protests in Southern Europe
A coordinated group of local overtourism protest organisations, the "Southern Europe Network Against Touristification (SET)," has announced a day of coordinated protests on Sunday, June 15th, 2025. These actions are expected to impact tourist areas across Spain and southern Europe.
Key Information for Travelers
At time of writing (June 12th), airlines and the Spanish airport operator Aena have not issued any notice of flight cancellations or schedule changes for Sunday 15 June, when the anti-tourism marches are due to take place. Flights should operate more or less normally. The main risk is getting to and from the airport: road closures, slow-moving traffic and fuller-than-usual public transport around Barcelona-El Prat, Palma, Ibiza, Tenerife South, Lanzarote and other tourist hubs could lengthen journeys. Build in extra time, keep an eye on your airline's app, and stay clear of any crowds.
Affected Locations
Protests are expected in the following locations:
- Majorca
- Menorca
- Malaga
- Barcelona
- Ibiza
- Lisbon
- Tenerife
- Lanzarote
Protests are also speculated in, but not limited to, these areas:
- Alicante
- Gran Canaria
- Valencia
- Bilbao
- Donostia-San Sebastián
- Santander
- Pamplona
Please be aware that almost anywhere in Spain and southern Europe with significant tourism impact could be affected, as more than 60 local groups were involved in the planning meeting.
Additional Industrial Action
June 13th, 2025, is also the deadline set by Spain's biggest hospitality union for a pay deal for its members. If an agreement is not reached, strikes are planned throughout the summer, which could lead to further disruptions for travelers.
