Best beaches in US named

Dr Beach has revealed the top 10 beaches in the USA for 2008 and British holiday favourite Florida has two of the top three.
The best beach in the US in 2008, according to Dr Beach, is Caladesi Island State Park in the Clearwater/Dunedin area of Florida. Hawaii, famous for its surf beaches, comes out second with Hanalei Beach in Kauai. Siesta Beach [pictured] in Sarasota, Florida is ranked as the third best beach in the US.
Dr Beach - real name Stephen Leatherman, director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research - uses 50 criteria to evaluate the best beaches, including water and sand quality.
"Caladesi is a well-kept secret. Surrounded by the beauty of a lush state park, few people in Tampa seem to know its whereabouts, while everyone is familiar with the popular Pier 60 at nearby Clearwater Beach. Caladesis real attraction is its powder white sand, warm, crystal clear water and beautiful nature, all making it the number one beach to enjoy and decompress," says Dr Beach.
New York State, not as famous for its beaches, also figures prominently in the top 10 beaches in the US. Two beaches in New Yorkers' favourite summer playground, the Hamptons, make the top 10 list. Coopers Beach in Southampton is ranked at number four, while East Hampton beach is at number six.
California, synonymous with beach and surf culture, only has one representative in the top 10. Coronado Beach in San Diego comes in at number five. Hamoa Beach on the Hawaiian island of Maui is at number seven, and another Florida beach - Cape Florida State park in Key Biscayne - is ranked ninth.
Two more east coast beaches also make it into the top 10. Cape Hatteras in the Outer Banks of North Carolina is rated eighth best beach, while Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island, South Carolina rounds out the top 10.
