Treat yourself to Mediterranean antipasti or a New York steak
Whether you prefer milano salami or a good, old-fashioned steak, you'll find something to get your mouth watering at the Stansted Radisson Blu. The hotel has two restaurants and a bar that serves food, and every dish is an indulgent little treat. Just be warned, you may find yourself wishing you had a bit more time to fit in a meal at all three!
A taste of Italy
The hotel's main restaurant is the bistro-style Italian Filini. Mixing fresh ingredients with traditional Mediterranean dining, the informal setting and straightforward presentation of Filini leave the food to speak for itself. You could have a freshly-made stonebaked pizza for less than £15 or grilled seabass with spinach and pine kernels for £19.95, but we chose to have a light sharing platter of antipasti. These vary from a range of fresh vegetables and bruschetta to generous helpings of creamy gorgonzola and rich pecorino cheese with flavourful salami and cured meats, for between £16.50 and £18.50.
From 6am to 10.30am on weekdays, a half hour later on weekends, Filini serves a hot breakfast buffet including scrambled, fried and boiled eggs, grilled tomatoes, bacon, sausage and beans, along with fruits, yoghurt, bread and a conveyor-belt toaster. Give your room number to the staff, then help yourself to food and drink while your server pours you some tea or coffee.
A taste of New York
The New York Grill bar is an upmarket steakhouse offering a range of beautifully-cooked Scottish Black Angus steaks. We had surf and turf with a juicy and tender 8oz sirloin topped with three grilled whole prawns. The prawns were messy to get into, but inside the meat was delicious and so light and fluffy it had the texture of crab. On the side, we had a thick, smoky mushroom sauce and crunchy hand-cut potato wedges that we smothered in hickory-smoked barbecue dressing. At £29, the dish wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny. As well as steaks, the restaurant offers alternatives such as a trio of mini burgers or Jack Daniels-marinated baby back ribs, with a range of dessert options, including root beer creme brule.
Angels' Wine Tower bar serves a bar menu of light meals from 10.30am to midnight, including sandwiches and burgers. The food is certainly upmarket, particularly the huge, tasty burger, with bacon, cheese and onion rings that we had and it's a great, informal place for a nice lunch, but it can be on the pricey side - £15.95 for the burger.
If you get peckish outside of the restaurant opening hours or just don't fancy leaving your room, the Radisson offers a 24-hour room service with a limited menu of bar food and drinks.
