Best travel money card Croatia

It can be difficult to work out how you should organise your travel money when you go abroad. You may opt to take out cash before you leave, exchange your money once you arrive, use your normal debit or credit cards, or buy a prepaid travel money card.

Can I use euros in Croatia?

Croatia's currency is the kuna, which is split into 100 lipa. Some places also accept euros, as the majority of Croatia's tourists come from Europe. The occasional business will even write out their prices in euros, making the process easier for foreign travellers.

However, this is an unofficial service, and you shouldn't expect to be able to use euros wherever you go.

Should I use cash or card?

You can use either, but always have both handy, just in case. Busy towns and cities usually have plenty of ATMs in banks, supermarkets, train stations and airports, and you'll find that supermarkets, pharmacies, large hotels and restaurants often take card payments. You can even change your money in many established hotels, but bear in mind that the currency exchange rates are usually fairly poor, so it's best to go to a bank.

In smaller towns and villages, you should expect to pay in cash. In reality, most foreign visitors find themselves using their cards 50% of the time.

What is the best travel card for Croatia?

There is a variety of prepaid currency cards that support the Croatian kuna. One of the most popular card providers is TransferWise. Its travel money card can be used with over 40 currencies, which can be converted immediately on the TransferWise app. It's powered by Mastercard, so you'll be able to use it on any cash machine or ATM that supports that provider.

This should mean you can use it to withdraw cash in millions of ATMS across the world. And if you take out less than the equivalent of £200 of cash per month, you won't be charged any additional fees. You can also use your travel money card as a payment method in hotels, restaurants and shops that have a Mastercard reader. TransferWise also takes safety seriously. If you lose your card or fear it's been stolen, you can contact the company to block it and any future payments or withdrawals that are made.

However, this is just one of the card options available, and you should compare them online to find the best one for you.
