Never mind the VIP treatment - there's some serious red-carpet rolling-out going on for families at the Novotel London Excel. Children stay free, eat breakfast free, and have their own play areas - but it's the personalised gift they'll receive on arrival that'll really make the little ones feel like celebrity guests. There's a special kids' menu in the restaurant too - and in fine weather the whole family can enjoy their meal on the terrace, overlooking the Royal Victoria Dock. You can even bring your pets with you - yes, when we say this is a hotel for the whole family, we really mean it.
Arrival at the Novotel London Excel
You can check in from 2pm. If you're driving, and there is space, you can park overnight in the hotel's indoor car park, which costs £15; otherwise, you can park in the Royal Victoria car park across the road, about 200 yards from the hotel. The Royal Victoria is slightly more expensive - £15 for up to 15 hours, and £20 for up to 24 hours.
Leave the M25 at junction 30 and take the A13 into London - it's the first exit if you're going anticlockwise, and the third exit if you're going clockwise.
Stay on the A13 for about 12 miles, going straight on at all the interchanges.
At the roundabout with the A1011, near Canning Town tube station, take the second exit, staying on the A13. Shortly afterwards, bear left onto Barking Road, which becomes East India Dock Road.
Turn left onto Leamouth Road, then take the second exit at the roundabout onto Lower Lea Crossing. Take the second exit at the next roundabout too, onto Tidal Basin Road. This road will become Western Gateway, and the hotel is at the end of it.
By public transport:
Take the Jubilee line to Canning Town, then the Docklands Light Railway to Custom House. Come out of the station and follow the signs to the Excel Centre. The hotel is opposite the main entrance.
You must check out by noon. You can book a taxi to the airport at reception - it'll cost about £10. The journey takes about six or seven minutes.
Getting to and from London City airport
Make sure you book your taxi to the airport in advance at the hotel reception. Transfers are by taxi and will cost about £10. The journey will take six to seven minutes. Don't worry if your flight leaves in the early hours, taxi transfers run 24-hours a day.
