It's impossible to take a trip to Rome without visiting the Colosseum. The impressive structure is the largest amphitheatre ever built, and was constructed between 70-80 AD. Back in the day, it could hold up to 80,000 spectators who would watch gruesome gladiator battles and other public displays. A Colosseum by night tour, with underground access will set you back £70.

Or you could go to Musei Vaticani and Cappella Sistina which is one of the world's biggest museums and an overwhelming maze of 54 galleries, hallways and courtyards.

Finally, you could explore Domus Aurea, also known as the 'Golden House', which at its time was thought to be one of the most impressive residencies. It was built between 64-68 AD by the Emperor Nero after the great fire had destroyed part of the city.
