Borghese Gallery

Situated in a picturesque Roman garden villa, Cardinal Borghese gathered in the 17th Century one of the greatest collections of art in the world. Highlights include Titian's Sacred and Profane Love, Bernini's sculpture Apollo and Daphne, and several Caravaggios. Alongside the villa you'll find an impressive aviary and a number of secret gardens, which are worth seeing when they're open.

Capitoline Museums

The excellent artworks in the Capitoline Museums are placed in two palazzi either side of the Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo. They're home to both ancient and modern pieces, including Bernini's magnificent statue of Pope Urban VIII and a gallery featuring works by Caravaggio and Tintoretto.

Doria Pamphili Gallery

In this fine palazzo owned by the aristocratic Doria Pamphili family, you'll find gems from Raphael, Bernini and Breughel the Elder, while the audio guide that is included in the ticket price features Prince Jonathan Pamphili himself, providing a number of entertaining anecdotes. It's worth booking a ticket for the Saturday morning tour, which features an art historian and live orchestra.

MAXXI

The National Museum of the 21st Century Arts, abbreviated to MAXXI, was designed by prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, and it's an impressive work of modern art in itself. There are plenty of good exhibitions on the inside as well, often focusing on architectural themes. A great place to come to with the family, there are plenty of café tables and an outside piazza for children to run around, while the ice-cream shop round the back of the museum is one of the best in the capital.
