Safety Tips When Travelling To Rome

Rome is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, and for good reason. Steeped in history, it's the home of some of the most iconic landmarks in the world, from the ancient Colosseum to St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. At Holiday Extras, we provide airport transfers to all the main locations, helping to make your time abroad stress free.

Visiting a big European city can also bring its dangers, however, so make sure to read our guide on how to stay safe when travelling to Rome.

Pickpockets

As with any major tourist city, pickpockets operate in Rome, particularly in peak summer season when the opportunities are rife. Make sure to keep your purse or wallet well hidden, and avoid elaborately displaying your phone in crowded areas.

Be careful on the roads

Italy is renowned for its heated and impatient drivers, and Rome is where most accidents happen. If you're driving take extra care and watch out for the potholes.

Don't leave valuables in the car

If you decide to hire a car, don't leave suitcases or any other precious items in plain view, as thieves may well take advantage.

Avoid certain areas at night

At nighttime you might want to stay away from darkened areas such as around Termini and Piazza Vittorio, as although unlikely, they could provide opportunities for muggings.

Check accommodation is secure

Make sure you close windows and lock doors when you're heading out and about, especially if you're on the ground floor, as you're more vulnerable to break ins.

Be aware of scams

There are a number of scammers looking to con tourists, especially around the popular landmarks. Decline offers from people asking to carry your luggage, or special 'queue jumping passes' that don't exist.

Know the emergency numbers

It's a good idea to know who to call in case something goes wrong. For general emergency it's 113, the police can be contacted on 112, while for fire services it's 115.

Follow these tips and you're sure to have a fantastic time, and don't forget to book your Rome airport transfers with Holiday Extras, enabling you to get to your destination of choice in comfort and safety.
