UK gets Libya link

A new connection between London Heathrow and Libya has been made possible after Air Malta started a twice weekly service to the city of Benghazi.

The airline already flies to the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

As a result of the new service, UK travellers can now make same-day connections to Benghazi via Malta. This can be achieved on flights departing from Heathrow and Manchester on Thursdays.

Return flight connections operate on Tuesdays.

"As the only international airline operating from Benghazi, Air Malta is pleased to offer a unique service to UK passengers wishing to fly to this fascinating region," commented Air Malta's Leslie Muscat.

"At just one hour and 20 minutes' flight time from Malta to Benghazi and one hour to Tripoli, Malta makes the ideal connection point and we look forward to generating both business and leisure traffic on this route."

Tickets from the UK to Malta begin at £112.60 and the onward flight to Libya costs around £198.

The Lonely Planet has this to say about the country: "Libya's not all date palms and deserts, but if shifting sands and camel trains are your thing, Libya's got desert for days."
