Aer Lingus has record sales in March

Low cost airline Aer Lingus took over a million bookings on its website in March.

The Irish airline says its website experienced a 'huge surge' in bookings in March. On March 10 almost 250,000 visitors logged onto the website at the start of the Aer Lingus summer sale. The sale offered 30% off fares on every seat, on every flight, to all destinations to the UK and Europe for travel this summer.

"While consumer sentiment remains low, we recognise that our customers need a break from the recessionary doom and gloom and we have reacted to ensure that our offering has stimulated demand in the market. These record sales figures are testament to our commitment to delivering low fares which represent outstanding value for money to our customers,” comments Aer Lingus corporate affairs director, Enda Corneille.

As well as its European summer sale, Aer Lingus also offered cheap flights to the USA with fares starting from as little as €199 one-way including taxes and charges. In partnership with JeBlue Airways, Aer Lingus is also offering low fares to an additional 25 US cities, including its most popular destination, Las Vegas.

Last month Aer Lingus created a stir with its 999 Nudes campaign to launch its £9.99 no hidden extra’s fare from its new base at Gatwick Airport.

The airline used a social media campaign through popular online community sites such as Facebook and Twitter to recruit the 999 nudes to take part in a PR stunt in central London.

Over 2,000 people registered to take part, and the first 500 men and 500 women were invited to take part in return for two free flights to one of Aer Lingus’ eight new European destinations from Gatwick which include Vienna and Munich.

Speaking on the day, Corneille said: “We have had such a great reaction to today’s stunt both from our volunteers and from the general public, that I’m confident we will get the £9.99 message across - It’s a fantastic offer. We launch on April 6 but after today, people are going to know a lot more about who Aer Lingus are.”
