Quebec to celebrate 400th year

The Canadian city of Quebec will celebrate its 400th year of existence in 2008.

The city of Quebec will celebrate its 400th birthday in 2008 with a number of events taking place throughout the year.

July 3rd 2008 will officially mark the 400th anniversary of the founding Quebec, a milestone that has been reached by few other North American cities, according to the Canadian Tourism Commission.

The celebrations of the landmark year will begin on New Year's Eve 2007 and culminate on October 19th with a closing ceremony featuring a performance by the Cirque de Soleil.

One of the highlights of the year will be a show called the Image Mill, designed by Quebecois writer and director Robert Lepage.

Mr Lepage will set out to tell the story of Quebec using multiple projections on a 600-metre wide screen, with a number of images all themed around the number four.

Most of the festivities in the city throughout 2008 will be based at the Espace 400e, a themed exhibition centre located in Quebec's Old Port area.
