Hotel prices fall in Spain
[March 9th 2009]
City breaks to Spain are becoming a more attractive holiday option as figures show hotel prices in Spanish cities have fallen.
The price of a double room in Barcelona has fallen by 10 per cent from February to March this year to an average of £93 per night according to new figures from the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI). The average price for a hotel room in Barcelona over the past six months was £107.
In the Spanish capital of Madrid the average hotel price has decreased from £101 to £95 this month. March is a good time to visit both Barcelona and Madrid with temperatures typically around 16 degrees Celsius compared to the often uncomfortably high temperatures experienced during the peak summer holiday period.
Outside Spain another attractive option for a city break and where hotel prices have also fallen is the charming Italian city of Venice. Here the cost of a standard double room has dropped from £122 in February to £109 in March.
According to the trivago Hotel Price Index the UK is also still a cheap option for travellers from other European countries due to the weak pound.
Elsewhere around Europe hotel prices have generally increased. For example in the increasingly popular Turkish city of Istanbul, the price for a double room has leapt by 21% from £75 in February to £91 in March.
Even higher price rises have taken place in the German city of Hanover. Here prices have increased by 38% to £112, but trivago acknowledges this could be due in large measure to the CeBIT ICT trade fair taking place in the city.
The Hotel Price Index shows that the most expensive European city in March is Geneva, where the average price of a double room is a wallet-shrinking £184. By contrast, the cheapest hotel rooms in Europe in March are to be found in the beautiful and historic Polish city of Krakow where a standard double room will set you back just £61 on average.
Hotel prices for the most popular European cities can be found on trivago.co.uk. The average prices for a standard double room are calculated on the basis of 40,000 daily price inquiries for an overnight hotel stay.
