Exchange rates 'draw people to the US'

More people are opting to holiday in the US because of the currently favourable exchange rate than because of the country's celebrity appeal, an industry expert has said.

Despite this, a spokesperson for Thomson added that the high-profile move of the Beckhams to Los Angeles would influence some people in their holiday choice.

"I just don't think there's any doubt … that all of us, in Britain anyway, are influenced by the celebrity culture," she explained.

"That probably goes without saying. That's why you often see advertisements or editorial which will link a destination with a celebrity who also goes to that destination.

"So that is fairly common [and] fairly recent, apparently, I don't think it used to be that way maybe even 15 years ago, but it certainly is the case now."

However, she also said that "the terrific exchange rate" was still more of an influence than celebrity appeal.

"I think that's actually having more of an impact at the moment," she concluded.

Recently, Graham Norton told Now Magazine that he loved Los Angeles as a holiday destination.

He told the magazine: "Everything about the place is so exciting … we see it so much on TV, then you get to LA and it's right there in front of you."
