Over the summer months, the area around the river Seine in Paris is transformed into a beach, complete with deck chairs and palm trees and sun shades.

As millions of Parisians head south for their annual summer holiday in August, the capital makes a special effort to cater for the tourists who visit.

This includes to opening of Paris Plage, an artificial beach along the sides of the river which runs through the heart of the city.

A statement from tour operator Eurolines says to the transformation: "For anyone going to Europe’s capital of style, culture and romance this August the beach is a perfect place to relax for while.

"It has to be one of the must-do things this summer in Paris."

However, there are plenty of other things that visitors can do while they are in Paris - like sampling the cuisine that the French are famed for, or visiting one the city's many galleries and museums.

Recently, tourist officials launched a campaign to encourage people from Paris who regularly interact with tourists to behave in a more polite and approachable manner.

Paris Plage was first opened in 2001 and now includes over two miles of sand.
