Hanks enjoys Italian horse race

Hollywood actor Tom Hanks visited the Italian city of Siena to enjoy a local horse race, media reports suggest.

The Forrest Gump star was spotted watching an adrenaline-charged bareback horse race around the medieval city.

In total, more than a thousand holidaymakers descended on the city for the race - which takes place through the usually cafe-lined Piazza del Campo.

While the Saving Private Ryan actor was in town for the horse race, visitors can find plenty to occupy them at any time of the year.

Indeed, Siena was made a World Heritage Site in 1995 and the city's magnificent historical palaces, courtyards and churches are a constant draw for UK holidaymakers.

Some of the most famous attractions in the city include Palazzo Pubblico - the seat of Siena's government since the 13th century - and the impressive Duomo - a gothic cathedral begun in the 13th century.

Nearby are also the vineyards where Italy's famous Chianti wine is manufactured.
