Southampton airport upgrades check in
[18th June 2008]
Southampton airport has invested more than £3 million in new check in and baggage facilities to help reduce queues at the airport.
In addition to three new check in desks, airline Flybe has installed 10 new self service check in kiosks for time-pressed travellers. Two of the new kiosks are in the short stay airport car park, enabling passengers to check in before they reach the terminal building.
The new facilities at the airport sees the number of check in options almost double from the original 14 check in desks to 27 check in points.
Behind the scenes, Southampton airport has also invested in a major upgrade to its baggage handling systems. Thanks to the investment passengers at the airport should see an improvement in baggage handling as the number of bags that can be processed per hour has nearly doubled. The baggage handling upgrade also incorporates the latest security technology.
The installation of 13 new check-in facilities will benefit the time-conscious passenger by providing additional choice for check-in. This, together with the baggage system developments, aim to ensure that passengers continue to experience the easy and fast service that Southampton Airport is known for, comments Southampton airport director of planning and development, Dave Lees.
The new check in and baggage facilities are now operational for the start of the busy summer holiday season at the airport. Last month Southampton airport welcomed 187,122 passengers, a 6.9% increase over May 2007.
