Luton airport welcomes 10 million passengers

Luton airport has received more than 10 million passengers in a year for the first time in its 70 year history.

The landmark figure was reached on Valentine’s Day. Over 40 new flights have been introduced at Luton airport over the last two years by airlines including low fares airlines easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Monarch and Thomsonfly, and all business class airline Silverjet.

“With a key focus on offering more destinations to our passengers, particularly cities in Central and Eastern Europe and with the introduction of a premium transatlantic product from Silverjet’s private terminal, London Luton Airport has seen a notable increase in passenger throughput, helping us to reach this fantastic milestone,” says Luton airport marketing director, Natalie Raper.

The top 10 most popular destinations from Luton in 2007 were Edinburgh, Malaga, Glasgow, Warsaw, Belfast International, Dublin, Paris, Budapest, Amsterdam and Geneva. The airport says that 83% of passengers are on low cost flights.

One of the newest airlines to offer flights from Luton airport is central European low cost airline SkyEurope which has bases in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. SkyEurope now offers flights from Luton to Bratislava, Prague, Kosice and Poprad.

Earlier this year another European low fares airline Wizz Air introduced new flights to Wroclaw, its fifth route between Luton and Poland. Wizz Air also flies from Luton to Gdansk, Katowice/Krakow, Poznan and Warsaw in Poland.

Luton is also the base for business class only airline Silverjet, which recently launched new flights to Dubai. Altogether over 90 destinations are offered from Luton by airlines including Flybe, XL Airways, Aer Arann and Spanair.
