Heathrow voted least favourite airport

[December 3rd 2008]

Heathrow airport has been voted the worst airport in the world by frequent flyers.

When asked “Which airport do you think is the worst in the world?” 15% of respondents worldwide voted for Heathrow. In equal second place for the worst airport in the world, but with a mere 5% of the vote each, were Paris Charles de Gaulle and Los Angeles LAX airports.

Among British voters Heathrow fared even worse. Thirty percent of them voted for Heathrow, followed by 5% for Gatwick, 4% for Los Angeles LAX and 3% for Paris Charles de Gaulle.

The frequent travellers, who take an average of 19 flights a year, were also asked to name their favourite airport. Among travellers worldwide Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok was voted best airport, with 13%. Runner up was Singapore Changi with 11%, followed by Amsterdam Schiphol with 7% and Dubai World Central airport with 5%.

British travellers saw things slightly differently, with 17% voting Singapore Changi their favourite airport. Amsterdam Schiphol was runner up with 11%, followed by Dubai World Central airport with 9% and Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok with 7%.

The frequent flyers quizzed are all members of the Priority Pass airport VIP lounge programme. Priority Pass provides frequent travellers with access to airport lounges regardless of their class of travel, airline flown or existing membership in an airline loyalty programme.

There are more encouraging signs for Heathrow in the future, however. “Heathrow’s reputation remains battered after a series of PR disasters in the last year or so, but there are signs that Terminal 5 may be able to swing opinion back in the long-term,” comments Priority Pass brand director, Jonathan French.

In March this year Priority Pass members voted for their favourite airport lounge. The overall winner was the Continental Presidents Club airport lounge in Terminal E at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston Texas.

Best airport lounge in Europe was the Swiss-Lounge in Y Terminal at EuroAirport, Basel-Mulhouse in Switzerland. The Holideck airport lounge in Terminal 4 at Heathrow airport was highly commended.
