First Gatwick to Oman flights

Oman Air is launching the first direct flights between London Gatwick and the increasingly popular holiday destination of Oman.

Flights between Gatwick and Muscat in Oman will depart six times a week, take just over seven hours and cost from £343 return. Departing Gatwick at 22.30 flights will arrive in Oman at 09.45 local time, returning at 16.00 and arriving at Gatwick at 20.30.

On the eve of the first flight between Gatwick and Oman, the Sultan of Oman, his majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, sent his royal orchestra to perform at a gala dinner in London attended by senior diplomats.

The 32 piece orchestra has played for several heads of state including Queen Elizabeth II, and has a unique sound which mixes Middle Eastern and western influences with two bagpipe players thrown in for good measure.

Less well known and far less developed than neighbour Dubai, Oman has beautiful beaches, dramatic desert and mountain scenery, five star hotels, and lots of historical sites. Bordered by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, Oman is also the mythical home of Sinbad the Sailor.

Popular tourist activities in Oman include diving, dolphin, whale and turtle watching, sand skiing, mountain climbing and camping. The Muscat Festival takes place in January and features traditional dancing, concerts and various temporary theme parks.
