While working for Saga's Roger De Haan in the early Eighties Gerry Pack uncovered a niche market. Given a project organising the extra logistics of holiday-making such as airport hotels, airport parking and travel insurance, Gerry found an area that travel agents disliked handling and he himself found frustrating.
After numerous phone calls and speaking to travel agents to find out what they did he found that they all had different methods.
"The only thing they had in common was they all hated doing it," he said. "It was a pain in the butt and they didn't make any money out of it. I thought it could be an opportunity - and the rest is history."
Twenty-two years on his company Holiday Extras constantly evolves to remain a leading holiday logistics operation. This year Holiday Extras was number 23 in the Sunday Times' Top 100 Best Small Companies to work for list.
Arranging airport parking, airport hotels, travel insurance, rail to the airport, coach travel with an airport hotel, foreign exchange, port hotels, theatre tickets and airport lounges, Holiday Extras provides a one-stop travel shop for 2.5 million customers a year.
Continued growth over the last three years has seen the company increase turnover to £85 million and 74 percent growth sees the business retain its number 16 spot in Mega Growth.
Under the umbrella of ABC Holdings, the group also owns Airparks, an off-airport parking provider.
