Tell me about Singapore Airlines

When you're given a Givenchy fleece blanket on the plane - and you're travelling in economy class - you know you've picked a pretty prestigious airline.

Singapore Airlines is the country's flag carrier based at Changi airport, from where it flies to 62 destinations on six continents. The airline was founded in 1947 as Malayan Airways and became Singapore Airlines in 1972. In May 2011, it announced plans to launch a low-fare airline, called New Aviation.

What makes Singapore Airlines special?

Singapore Airlines was the first to offer free headsets, a choice of meals and free drinks to economy class passengers; the first to offer passengers phones on board; the first to bring in a panel of top chefs to design passenger menus.

Has Singapore Airlines won any other awards?

The airline has won awards for its in-flight entertainment system, KrisWorld, which, as well as TV channels, films, games and music, features news updates, city guides and even language lessons for passengers. Just this year, it has won 16 awards so far, including Traveller's World Magazine's best airline award; five awards in the DestinAsia Readers' Choice Awards; top worldwide airline in the Wanderlust Travel Awards for the fourth consecutive year; and Global Traveler's best airline in the world award.
