1. The Sheraton Skyline at Heathrow

The centrepiece of the Heathrow Sheraton Skyline is the massive, tropical indoor pool. Swim under the footbridge and up to the bar for a cocktail, or just lounge around the pool together gazing up at the stars through the glass roof. Either way you've got a great start to your romantic break, and with two restaurants and a second bar this four-star hotel has everything you need for a special start to a special trip.

2. The Crowne Plaza Liverpool Airport

A great spot to start a romantic break early, the Crowne Plaza at Liverpool John Lennon airport has unique charm and atmosphere. Converted to a hotel from the beautiful old 1930s art deco terminal building, the Crowne Plaza is a hotel like no other. With a traditional aviation theme throughout and views over the old runway, you'll be in the mood for a romantic adventure.

And if that's not enough, this is where the Beatles landed when they came home after conquering America, the fab four's influence can be seen throughout the whole hotel. Can't buy me love? Starting your holiday at the Crowne Plaza might be the closest thing.

3. The Genting hotel at Birmingham Airport

The Genting, only ten minutes from Birmingham Airport, isn't just a four-star hotel with excellent bars and restaurants, it also benefits from being part of Resort World - with an additional 15 restaurants, shopping and the Genting casino. Want to start your romantic holiday with a night of poker and martinis looking - and feeling - like James Bond? If you're starting your holiday from Birmingham, the Genting may well be what you need.

4. The Grand Hotel Gosforth Park, Newcastle airport

Really, the name says it all. If you're jetting off from Newcastle for a romantic break, this is where you want to kick the whole thing off. 12 acres of parkland, tennis and squash courts and its own hair salon make this more of a mini-break in its own right than a place to sleep before you catch a plane. So if you do choose The Grand Hotel for the first night of your valentine adventure you may want to get here early and enjoy the place properly!

5. The Hilton T5 at Heathrow

This hotel, right next to Heathrow's Terminal 5, has an on-site spa and multiple bars and restaurants, but what makes it one of our top choices for date night is Mr Todiwala's Kitchen. This fantastic gourmet Indian restaurant is fronted by Michelin-star chef Cyrus Todiwala and its spicy deliciousness is sure to make the first night of your holiday go with a bang. Our customers also say in their reviews that the beds at the Hilton T5 are super-comfy.

6. The Gatwick Hilton

It just might be those extra hours in bed that make the Hilton at Gatwick airport one of our most popular hotels. Just a few minutes' stroll from departures, you can't stay closer at the south terminal than the Gatwick Hilton, and when you do you'll enjoy the benefits of four-star luxury, three restaurants, two bars and a cafe before you retire for the night.

7. Manchester Etrop Grange

This one's a bit fancy. A Grade II-listed Georgian mansion, Manchester airport's Etrop Grange is a grand setting for the start of a big adventure. It also holds the peculiar distinction of being our closest hotel to the airport that isn't under the flight path. So at just a mile from the terminals you'll enjoy relative peace and quiet as you enjoy the manor and its surrounds, but one of the shortest transfers to the airport the morning you fly. Rooms are full of character, some even with four-poster beds, so you can enjoy a proper English country house the night before you fly off.

8. Stansted Radisson Blu

At the centre of the Radisson Blu at Stansted stands a literal tower of wine - 40 feet of illuminated wine rack overlooking the impressive Sky Bar. If you're going on your first holiday together and hoping to start things off over drinks and dinner, the Radisson Blu has you covered. Great food and drink, themed rooms and a visually stunning tower of wine make an evening here before you fly off a night to remember.

9. Gatwick Sofitel

Another of our best-selling hotels, the Gatwick Sofitel is a real treat to start your break. Three restaurants on site including a French brasserie and Far Eastern fusion, two beautiful bars and four-star luxury, the hotel is as close as you can get to departures at the North terminal. So it's another excellent choice if your holiday priority is a few more hours in bed before you catch your plane.

10. Stanhill Court, Gatwick

The Stanhill Court is an old stately home just 10 minutes' drive from Gatwick airport, sitting peacefully in more than 30 acres of its own grounds and woodland. Built in 1881 as a family home, the hotel has preserved the wood panelling, minstrels' gallery, library and stained glass from the original decor and boasts an AA-rosette-winning restaurant as well as characterful rooms, some with four-poster beds or roll-top baths. If a romantic break for you starts with traditional fine dining, walking together through the grounds and then a short hop to the airport to catch your flight, you'll love the Stanhill Court as much as we do.
