Mean Girls review | What we thought

Fetch is officially happening at the Savoy Theatre. Here's what we thought of the Mean Girls musical painting the West End pink…

A 00s nostalgia fest for the West End

It's not easy to adapt a film with such enduring popularity to the stage and keep die-hard fans happy. You could go the way of Mrs. Doubtfire and Back to the Future, whose stage productions stick firmly to a script too timeless to mess with. Or you could take inspiration from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which takes a beloved book and film series and creates a whole new story. Risky business with such a loyal fanbase, but it paid off big time. The stage show is now considered as much a part of the Wizarding World as any of the books or films.

Mean Girls feels more like Mrs. Doubtfire and Back to the Future, with a little sprinkling of something new for modern audiences. Plastics, Mathletes and anyone who can quote the film word-for-word will rejoice, as most of the high school comedy's iconic lines are kept in the show. But anyone new to North Shore High doesn't have to put up with mid-00s references the whole time. Gags about air fryers, social media and recent pop-culture moments sit nicely alongside nostalgic 00s one-liners.

The cast is so fetch

The casting is absolutely spot on. Comic relief comes from Damian (played by Tom Xander), who delivers zingy punchlines alongside best friend Janis (Elena Skye). The double act get the show off to a raucous start, introducing Cady (Charlie Burn) to the high school cliques in Where Do You Belong?, a hilarious musical performance that leads nicely into Meet The Plastics.

It's here we meet the infamous Plastics. Georgina Castle and Elèna Gyasi convince as Regina George and Gretchen Wieners, but it's Grace Mouat who steals the show as loveably stupid Karen Smith. If her Halloween banger Sexy doesn't make you belly laugh, you're going straight into our burn book.

And then there's Charlie Burn, who has the impossible job of trying to match Lindsay Lohan's iconic performance as Cady Harris. There's only one Lindsay Lohan of course, but Charlie's versatility is exceptional as she plays home-school-era Cady as convincingly as her transformation into a Plastic. She manages to play both parts brilliantly in Revenge Party, where she shines alongside besties Damian and Janis.
