Harry Potter and the Cursed Child | What we thought

Wingardium Leviosa: lifting the curtain on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Growing up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, I devoured every book, watched every film, and dreamt of Hogwarts. So when I had the chance to re-enter the wizarding world with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, I jumped at it. This West End sensation has transitioned from page to stage, picking up 19 years after the 7th book, giving fans a fresh continuation of the story that we all know and love.

Adapted by Jack Thorn, and directed by John Tiffany, Cursed Child is a two-part production that spans an impressive 5¼ hours. With a much-needed dinner break in between to keep the magic flowing. The show premiered in 2016, and quickly became a critically acclaimed success, winning a record-breaking nine Olivier Awards.

Part One

The theatre itself is grand, with subtle nods to Hogwarts in its design. I recommend arriving early to enjoy a drink at the bar, find your seats, and take in the theatre's beauty.

As you enter you're instantly immersed you in the magic. And once the show begins, it's not long before you're reunited with beloved characters from the books, only this time, with their children.

The special effects are truly fantastic, from the Polyjuice transformations to thrilling transitions, the lighting and sound design create a truly immersive experience. The first part ends on a cliffhanger, leaving you eager for more, but given the show's length, the break is welcome. There's plenty of time to enjoy a meal and a stroll before Part Two.

Part Two

Part Two builds on the foundations set in Part One, and drives the story to new heights. The narrative delves deeper into the complexities of friendship and the age-old battle of good and evil. The final hour builds to a dramatic peak, ending in a heart-stopping showdown that had the entire audience on the edge of their seats.

Admittedly, I was sceptical about how well the play could capture the magical essence of the Harry Potter world, especially compared to the film's CGI. Although I missed some of the beloved book characters and the iconic music, overall, I was impressed with this adaptation. It's not just a play, it's an experience that brings the magic of the wizarding world to life in a way that only live theatre can. I've never seen such magical stage effects that immerse you completely, creating a truly enchanting experience.

This show is a fantastic day out, and you will be spellbound throughout. Be prepared for a new, modern twist on the wizarding universe. Come with an open mind and let the magic unfold.
