Why the Moxy Slough should be your next airport hotel

From what on the menu really hits the spot to made-to-make-your-mouth-water cocktails. Not forgetting that all-important breakfast – do they have waffles or pancakes and is the cooked breakfast a hit or a miss?

Well, what can we say about the Moxy Slough? Understated and underwhelming? A bland colour scheme with Smooth radio playing gently in the background? Erm, nope!

Firstly, it instantly impressed us with its glass front, standing proudly on the corner of the road, just daring you to come on in and see what it has to offer. It's a fairly new hotel so expect zero tired decor or carpet here. And once you're through the revolving doors it positively smacks you around the chops with its loud personality! Think neon pink, modern, fun, golden pineapples, lego hotels, Thunderbirds are go and full-on quirkiness and you've got the Moxy Slough down to a T.

Firstly, a heads up that if you need overnight parking, it isn't actually at the hotel but at a car park just across the road. We all had bags with us, and it was totally manageable and only took 3 minutes to get to the hotel. There's one main road in the high street to cross, but there's a pedestrian crossing so it's all nice and easy. One turn around the corner and you're at the revolving doors of the Moxy Slough.

Top tip – if you need accessible parking, just give the hotel a call when you're on your way. They'll direct you to their accessible parking which is at the back of the hotel complete with easy access straight to the reception in the lobby.

Location

It may not be right on the airport's doorstep, but it's perfect if you're looking to sample the local area without paying airport meal prices. You're not short of options either – coffee bars, restaurants and loads of shops are all just steps away. Not forgetting the option to explore nearby Windsor if you've got the time – if the flag's flying, apparently he's available for a cuppa!

Located centrally in Slough, Moxy is a quick 20-minute taxi or Uber from Heathrow Airport. There's also the train which takes around 35 minutes and runs on the Elizabeth line which is next to the hotel.

Food and drink

This is where the Moxy Slough shines – tuck into the 24-hour bar menu with all the snacks you could ever want, plus an extra bowl of nachos. If you're after something casual, the Moxy Bar has you covered. Enjoy comfort food classics like curry and pizza, or even try the Big Moxy Spud with loads of toppings – it's enough to set Toy Story's Rex screaming when you see the fabulous collection of various Mr Potato Heads (we suspect Darth Vader Potato Head won't be taken down so easy) suspended precariously next to the potato oven!

We ate here and went for the burger, with nachos and mac 'n' cheese bites. All were delicious but the mac 'n' cheese bites were just m'wah and ridiculously moreish – they're good for you right?

If you're feeling more like dinner with a view, then take the separate ninth-floor only lift and check out Jim's Kitchen & Bar where you can enjoy a delicious chicken shawarma bowl, loaded fries or maybe one of their fabulous-looking pizzas with wagyu meatballs with burrata and hot honey anyone? We didn't eat here but did pop up to enjoy the view with a glass of wine at the bar. Views are spectacular and you can even spot Windsor Castle in the distance.

Let's talk a bit more about the Moxy Bar, as it really is the social heart of the hotel. With squishy sofas dotted around, suspended chairs to relax in and plenty of tables and chairs, the vibe here is to grab a drink and just chill. Order from the bar anytime using the QR codes on every table – once you've got your spot, you're keeping your spot!

There's also a pretty impressive drinks menu, with cocktails on tap plus a cocktail of the day to keep things fresh. We felt it was our duty to sample a cocktail (or two) and went for two of our favourites – a classic margarita and an espresso martini. Both were absolute flavour bombs.

Breakfast

Breakfast here is all about convenience and choice but never, ever boring. Grab yourself a plate and tuck into the self-serve buffet with everything you could possibly want. The sausages still live rent-free in our heads as they were banging bangers – so yummy.

Grab as many fresh pancakes as you can stack, or take your pick of so many pastries – including pink (what else at the Moxy!) iced doughnuts. Mmmmmmmm, donuts. If you're still undecided, what about trying an all-day breakfast flatbread? If you're all about plant-based or have other dietary needs, don't worry as there are vegan sausages and gluten-free options all made fresh to order.

Rooms

Let's be honest, the first thing we all tend to do when checking into a room, after flopping on the bed to see just how comfy it is and taking a peek at the bathroom, is plug in our phones, which means bedside USB chargers are a huge bonus – and the Moxy Slough has them! The Moxy vibe carries on into the rooms so expect quirky bathrooms with bright pink toiletries from DeepMuk. The 24-hour bar menu can be easily ordered from your room with more QR codes. All this and a big queen-size comfy bed plus a huge TV – hand me that bar menu!

Everything else

The fun doesn't stop with the decor – Moxy Slough brings in so many playful extras. You'll find a full-size ping pong table, giant Jenga, and foosball. Turns out we suck at ping pong but are surprisingly good at foosball! All of these can be found in the restaurant area where you're encouraged to sit with a drink, a snack or a meal and just chill. There's also a well-equipped 24-hour gym if you're up for a workout, complete with a bright pink punching bag to unleash your inner boxer.

The Moxy Slough may not be the closest hotel to Heathrow, but it's definitely a unique stay, delivering a mix of modern style and playful charm.
