The Book of Mormon Review | What we thought
This outlandish production from the creators of South Park is so much more than just shock value. It's got plenty of that too though, don't worry.
Outrageous South Park humour for the stage
The Book of Mormon, created by the masterminds behind South Park, is a musical that takes irreverence to a whole new level. For fans of the television show, the opening sequence pays homage to its characters, setting the stage for an outrageous and entertaining dive into what The Book of Mormon represents religiously.
From the outset, the humour is undeniably inappropriate, ranging from absurd scenes that South Park is well known for to the undermining of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The plot centres around two mismatched missionaries – Elder Price, an egotistical go-getter, and Elder Cunningham, a socially awkward outcast with little understanding of their scripture. As all Mormon missionaries are paired Two By Two, the dynamic between these polar opposites forms the crux of the story. Elder Price's self-centred ambition contrasts sharply with Elder Cunningham's endearing, bumbling nature, creating a yin and yang friendship that's oddly compelling.

So much more than shock value
The set design is a standout feature, ingeniously utilising the same props with varying backdrops and structures to shift the narrative. Notably, Elder Price's Orlando number and the Spooky Mormon Hell Dream sequence are sensory extravaganzas, the latter being led by demonic historical villains in true outlandish South Park style.
But despite its outlandish and often rude humour, The Book of Mormon is a good-natured and delightfully entertaining musical. It's a clever satire exploring deeper themes of faith, friendship and human experience. The creators balance shock value with genuine heart, and the punchy, memorable musical numbers keep the audience engaged and laughing throughout. Whether you're a South Park fan or simply enjoy a good laugh, this show is a must-see.
