The wedding invite that could cost you £1,000s! Brits say I DO to destination weddings
From long-haul flights to pricey hotels, Brits are going all in for destination weddings – here's how to do it without draining your bank account
Sun, sea… and a small fortune spent on someone else's big day.
A new survey from Holiday Extras shows nearly half of Brits (46%) are happy to fly across the world for a loved one's wedding – even if it means splashing out on long-haul flights, hotel stays, and all the bits in between.
And with wedding season in full swing, it's clear destination I DOs aren't slowing down. Italy, Greece, Turkey and the US are topping the charts for couples tying the knot abroad – leaving guests to juggle love, loyalty, and rising travel costs.
That said, not everyone's packing their passport. A quarter of us (25%) won't travel further than a short-haul flight or a train to Europe. 15% will fly as far as Turkey, Greece or Morocco – but nearly 1 in 10 (9%) won't even consider going overseas for a wedding.
Still, for those who are up for it, here are some tips to help justify the trip and make it a little easier on the wallet.
Travel as a group
If you're heading out with mates or family, group bookings can unlock savings on everything from accommodation to transport. Villas or Airbnbs can work out cheaper (and more fun) than hotel rooms. You can also split costs on transfers or car hire.
Pack smart
Weddings usually mean dressing up, which can mean bulky luggage. If you're flying with hand luggage only, check your airline's exact limits – some are stricter than others. Need to bring a suit or a dress? Look into vacuum packing bags or lightweight garment carriers. And if you're going with checked luggage, share a suitcase with someone to cut costs.
Turn it into a break
If you're making the effort to travel, why not stay a bit longer? Extending your trip by a few days especially midweek – can often mean cheaper flights, and gives you time to actually relax after all that confetti. Now it's not only their special day – it's your big holiday.
Book the extras early
You can save you up to 70% on things like airport parking, hotels and lounges by booking your holiday extras early. So if you're RSVP-ing 'yes' to a far-flung wedding, sort the extras ASAP and turn that spendy celebration into a proper holiday.
