Low fares airline Ryanair is offering one million seats for just 1p including taxes and charges from Tuesday following the upgrading of its website.

Ryanair’s online booking system and call centre was closed for part of the weekend in order to comply with the Office of Fair Trading’s directive to include taxes and other charges in the headline price for flights. Now the low cost airline has responded with a massive seat sale.

“Only Ryanair guarantees the lowest fares on every route, and to celebrate the reopening of our website, we will release 1 million seats on Tuesday morning for just 1p all in - no taxes, no airport charges. While other airlines talk low fares, only Ryanair delivers them,” says Ryanair’s head of sales and marketing, Sinead Finn.

Ryanair’s online booking engine was expected to be closed all weekend, but the upgrade was completed ahead of schedule and the website reopened on Sunday.

“Our new booking site, like our flights, has arrived under budget and ahead of schedule, says Ryanair’s head of communication, Peter Sherrard. “Our new, improved booking engine will enable us to welcome millions of additional passengers as we double in size to 100m passengers per annum,” he adds.

Ryanair says it has made a number of improvements to online booking following the upgrade. The speed of the website has been improved so that customers should be able to book more quickly, particularly during peak booking periods.

The online check-in period has been extended to 5 days before travel and customers can now check-in for both outbound and return flights at the same time. Finding the lowest fares for flights will also be easier with the addition of a ‘Flexible Search’ function. And fares now display inclusive of taxes on the flight select page as well as the home page.
