Aberdeen airport expansions

BAA and Aberdeen airport bosses claim that recent demonstrations against planned expansions have the potential to put aircraft in danger.

While acknowledging the right to protest Aberdeen North Labour MP Frank Doran said that when it impacts on business that it can be problematic.

The expansion plans are intended to create a "truly international gateway for north-east Scotland" over the next decade. BAA will be spending an initial £10million at Aberdeen to lengthen the runway and increase the size of the international arrivals hall. BAA is projected to spend an additional £60million on the runway, allowing much larger aircraft to fly from the airport and opening it up to more exotic destinations.

With passenger numbers predicted to grow to 5.9 million by 2030 it's vital that the airport expands. The increasing size of the airport will also provide significant boosts to the local and national economy. Aberdeen airport currently contributes almost £500 million to the Scottish economy as well as providing over 9,000 jobs. The expansion will open up an extra 1,200 jobs across the country.
