Heathrow furthers safety measures with new Tarsier system.
As the world's busiest airport, Heathrow is always looking for the latest developments in improving safety. As such, June 2008 saw the airport become Europe's first to invest in a state-of-the-art radar system designed to continuously scan its runways for foreign objects and debris (FOD).
Developed by leading British technology company QinetiQ, the system - known as Tarsier - uses two radars to scan the entire 3,658-metre runway 24 hours a day.
"Safety is our top priority," said Airside Operations Director Colin Wood. "Tarsier is a proven technological solution to the problem of FOD and will assist our operations team in carrying out regular visual runway inspections by acting as an additional pair of eyes."
Implementation of Tarsier comes as part of Heathrow's aim to maximise its usage of existing runways and eliminate delays.
The increase in airport safety will only serve to increase travellers flying from Heathrow. As such, it may be advisable to reserve a room at the 3-star Holiday Inn Ariel to avoid any potential delays before your flight.
Located just one-and-a-half miles from Heathrow Airport, this welcoming hotel features a bar and restaurant with excellent service guaranteeing a relaxing stay as you prepare for your flight.
