Good Friday forecast to be the most disrupted airport day of 2026

Holiday Extras launches new Flight Delay Cover to help travellers start their holiday in comfort.

Good Friday (3 April) is set to be the most disruption-prone airport day of 2026, according to new analysis from Holiday Extras, the UK's leading trip preparation specialist.

By analysing five years of UK departure performance, seasonal demand curves and European airspace trends, Holiday Extras has identified the three dates most likely to see significant airport delays this year:

  • Friday 3 April — Good Friday
  • Monday 31 August — Summer Bank Holiday
  • Friday 18 December — Friday before Christmas

Why these days are higher risk

The pattern is clear: peak demand creates pressure across the system. On major Bank Holidays and the final Friday before Christmas, airports and airlines operate close to maximum capacity. Aircraft, crews and ground teams are fully scheduled, meaning even minor technical issues, weather disruption or short-notice illness can quickly ripple through departure boards.

External factors also tend to cluster around these periods. Airspace restrictions, industrial action and network constraints elsewhere in Europe can all have knock-on effects for UK departures. For travellers, that means busier terminals and a higher likelihood of waiting around before take-off.

Turning delay time into downtime

To give customers more certainty during the countdown to departure, Holiday Extras has launched Flight Delay Cover as part of its insurance policies. Travellers who register their flight in advance will automatically receive support if their departure is delayed by two hours or more. Customers can choose between:

  • Airport lounge access — a quieter space with food and drink during the delay
  • £25 per person paid into a PayPal wallet

The benefit is triggered automatically once the delay threshold is met.

Alice Lawson, Associate Director of Insurance at Holiday Extras, said:

"Travel is incredibly resilient, but it is also complex. On the busiest days of the year, the entire aviation system is under pressure, and small issues can have a big impact.

"We can't prevent disruption, but we can help travellers prepare for it. Flight Delay Cover is designed to take the sting out of waiting — giving people either a comfortable space to relax in a lounge, or a cash payment they can use straight away.

"If your flight is delayed, your holiday doesn't have to be."

Planning ahead for peak travel days

Holiday Extras recommends that travellers flying on peak dates take the following steps:

  • Allow extra time at the airport
  • Check in online where possible
  • Monitor airline communications closely
  • Consider booking airport parking, hotels or lounges in advance to reduce stress on the day

As Europe's market leader in airport parking, airport hotels, lounges, transfers and insurance, Holiday Extras helps more than 11 million travellers each year prepare for their trips — providing personalised extras and support from booking through to departure.
