Flight delay cover
Take the sting out of flight delays.
If you're all set for take-off and your flight's held up, we get the frustration. That's why Holiday Extras travel insurance includes built-in cover that makes long waits a little easier. Simply register ahead of time, and you could enjoy one of the following benefits:
- Airport lounge access
- A cash payout of £25 per person
Read our terms and conditions to make sure you qualify.
How does it work?
From epic storms to sky congestion, flight delays do happen. But with protection already included in your policy, easing the inconvenience just takes a few simple steps:
Register your flight
This must be done no later than 12 hours before your scheduled departure time. You'll find the link in the email we send you after you book your travel insurance. Remember to:
- Register additional and return flights separately
- Include all passengers (you can list up to seven)
Once done, we'll send you a confirmation.
Choose your benefit
There are two options:
- Airport lounge access
A voucher will be emailed to you so you can relax in comfort away from the crowds - A £25 cash payout per person
This will be done via PayPal and can be used whenever you like
We'll keep an eye on your flight
If your flight* is delayed by more than two hours and meets the qualifying criteria**, you'll automatically receive your benefit. Here are some conditions that may apply:
- SmartDelay tracks almost all major commercial airline flights, but is limited to airlines/airports that report data regularly
- You can only register a flight if the airline has accurately reported its status to FlightStats
- If a flight doesn't meet the above terms, you will be notified, and your registration will be cancelled.
- For journeys involving multiple connections, each flight must be registered individually.
**The delay must be officially announced by the airline as outlined and reported to our flight status data service provider.
Enjoy yourself
We know a pause in your trip isn't ideal, but having cover will allow you to relax while things get back on track. From snacking in a lounge to enjoying some duty-free shopping, it's our way of helping you make the most of an unexpected situation.
Your questions, answered
Can I claim for delays on internal flights?
Yes, as long as you have registered the flight at least 12 hours ahead of departure.
If my flight changes ahead of my journey, how do I update the flight times?
If you've already registered your flight, you won't need to. It's all done for you automatically.
Can the lounge pass be used for a future trip?
It's only available for 24 hours and must be used within that timeframe.
How do I claim the lounge voucher?
If you are eligible for this benefit, it will be automatically sent to the email address and mobile phone number you gave when you registered.
- Use the 2D barcode found on your voucher to access the lounge
- You'll also receive vouchers for any other passengers covered by your policy
- When you access the lounge, you automatically agree to its conditions of use
How will my cash benefit be sent to me?
If you're eligible, you'll get a PayPal payout confirmation.
- If you have registered other travellers, the money will be sent to the main policyholder.
- We'll pass your email address to PayPal, and they'll credit your account.
- PayPal is a secure payment platform for sending and receiving money online.
Do I need to have an existing PayPal account?
No. We'll credit a PayPal wallet with your compensation and email you a link to set up an account. Please make sure that the PayPal account you create contains the same email address you used to register your flight.
