Abu Dhabi-based airline Etihad Airways are set to capitalise on the soaring costs of oil by purchasing a host of Boeing jets.
In a deal worth approximately £4.5 billion, the carrier has placed an order to buy 35 mid-sized Boeing Dreamliner jets alongside ten mid-sized Boeing 777s.
With the cost of oil showing no slowdown, the oil-rich United Arab Emirates and other members of OPEC (the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) have become the prominent financial beneficiaries. As a consequence, the national airlines of said nations find themselves in a position to enjoy rapid expansion, with the Etihad Airways deal a prime example.
The new planes ordered by Etihad are not set for delivery until 2011. Representatives at the Farnborough airshow, meanwhile, announced that the entire expansion of Etihad's fleet is proposed to include the purchase of up to 100 aircraft.
