Gatwick south terminal 50th birthday
The South Terminal at Gatwick celebrated 50 years in operation this week.
To mark the occasion, students from Central Sussex College in Crawley presented a special birthday cake that they had baked and iced. Matthew Hart, Edward Palmer, Warren Leggett and Leena Nayee are all studying for their NVQ level 3 professional cookery qualification.
Tutor Terry Pugh said:
"The College is always delighted to work with local industry, and the commissioning of this celebration cake is no exception. The students involved in this project found it an interesting and creative culinary challenge. We hope that the cake is enjoyed by those celebrating the 50th birthday of Gatwick’s South Terminal."
On 9 June 1958 the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh opened the terminal at Gatwick and then went on to open the new technical college in Crawley, now Central Sussex College.
Fifty years ago the new South Terminal building featured the first pier in Europe, providing passengers with a covered walkway from the terminal to the plane. The refurbished railway station built next to the terminal made Gatwick the first airport to combine air, rail and road transport links.
