Plane at take-off

Birmingham Airport has recorded an increase in flights across Europe in comparison to the same period in 2008.

Throughout the course of January 2009, the airport saw a 3.5% year-on-year increase, with over half-a-million passengers in total passing through the airport. And, during that period, Alicante, Malaga and Palma were proving popular for sun-seekers, while Grenoble and Geneva were major attractions for those indulging in winter sports.

Paul Kehoe, the airport's managing director, said: "All the indications are that we are in for a challenging period ahead, with the airport not immune to the current pressures affecting the UK economy.

"However, with a growing portfolio of carriers and routes from Birmingham and with a final decision regarding our proposed runway extension due in the coming weeks, there is still a lot to look forward to."
