Palma on a Budget

With so much to see and do, Palma is the perfect place for an inexpensive trip away. There are beaches and museums with free entry, as well as purse-friendly places to eat and drink. We've thought about how to do Palma on a budget, and here are our suggestions. Firstly, book one of ourairport transfersfor a reasonably priced journey to your Spanish location.

Accommodation

For a less expensive alternative to hotels, look for hostels in Palma. There are some great options including a family-run house with an on-site restaurant, some that are five minutes from the beach and others that let you hire a bike from reception. There are also villas to rent throughout the city – a self-catering holiday saves you money on eating out and pricey hotels.

Eating and drinking

You can eat out in Palma on a budget, you just have to do a little research first. Tapas places will generally give you a good deal, like Celler sa Premsa – with its three-course menu plus a drink for just over €10. There are also American-style diners like Restaurante Diner serving up loaded burgers (plus, it's open 'til 3am) and pubs with easy-going grub alongside cheap beers.

Things to do

You don't need to spend much money around Palma if you don't want to. There are miles of soft beaches with gently lapping tides to wander and sunbathe on. For a bit of culture, the Museu Fundación Juan March is a fascinating art gallery displaying work by Picasso, Miró and Dalí – and it's free to enter. Browse the markets to enjoy Palma's sights, smells and sounds – there's Mercat de l'Olivar and Mercat de Santa Catalina to stroll through.

Getting around

For day trips in and around Palma, the bus is the most cost effective way of travelling. A single ticket ranges from €1.50 within the city to €5 for locations further out of town. You can also hire a bike to see the sights on wheels – options for this start at about €6 per day. Of course, wandering the coast and taking in the beaches and mountainous views is entirely free of charge.
