Electric Car Parking FAQs
How long does it take to charge an electric car?
An electric car can take anything from half an hour to up to 12 hours to charge. This all depends on how big the battery is as well as how fast the charging point is. The fastest electric car charging points (43-150kW) are located at our hotels and car parks at Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham.
An electric car with a 60kWh battery takes around 8 hours to get a full charge from empty at a 7Kw charging point. You can add up to 100 miles onto your car's range with a rapid 50kW charger. As EV charging powers and cables vary, you can read more about the different types of EV chargers and their charge time below.
Are all EV (electric vehicle) chargers the same?
There are three different EV chargers: rapid, fast and slow.
Rapid chargers come with AC or DC power. Rapid AC chargers come with 4kW power, whereas Rapid DC chargers are powering at 50kW or more. Both types of Rapid chargers should charge electric vehicles to 80% capacity in 30 minutes to an hour. Other Rapid DCs include Tesla Superchargers, which charge at 120kW. Rapid AC chargers use a tethered Type 2 connector, whereas Rapid DC chargers come equipped with a CCS, CHAdeMO or Tesla Type 2 connection.
Fast chargers are those which have anything from 7kW to 22kW of power; these charge an electric car to full capacity in 3-4 hours. Fast connectors include a tethered Type 1 or Type 2 socket via connector cable.
Slow unit chargers are anything up to 3kW which are most ideal for overnight charging as it can take between 6-12 hours for a pure EV; for a PHEV, it takes 2-4 hours. Electric cars on a slow charge use a cable connected to the 3-pin or Type 2 socket.
Is parking free for electric vehicles?
Parking fees for charging your electric vehicle vary. At airports, you're likely to need at least 1 week's parking (or however long you're away for) which is why we recommend our airport parking and electric vehicle charge packages such as Luton Airparks Drop and Go or Birmingham Airparks Drop and Go, you can get a week's parking plus your electric car charged for as little as £6.00 a day.
If you're only going to be at the airport for a short time - such as dropping off or picking up passengers, your EV charge will most likely be free. Most official airport electric car charging stations are situated in the Short Stay car parks, so even if the electric vehicle charging points are free to use, you may have to pay the normal car parking rates for the time spent in the car park.
Alternatively, you could opt for one of our Airport Hotels with Parking and enjoy a night's stay in a hotel (where there's electric charging stations) near or at your departure airport with a week's parking. Some hotels that have electric car charging points include: Stansted Radisson Blu, Holiday Inn Gatwick, Mercure Hotel Heathrow, Clayton Manchester Airport, Holiday Inn Express NEC Birmingham and Ibis Luton Airport.
How much to charge an electric car?
The cost to charge an electric car varies! At home, it should cost you just under £8.00 for a full charge. If you charge your car at an airport, it can either be free or a charged at a standard or rapid rate for a fee (see our above tables for the latest airport electric car charging rates).
How do you charge an electric car?
To charge your electric car, you need to plug it into a charging point at the airport car park or hotel you're at (see our above tables for airports, airport hotels and airport car parks that have electric car charging stations). Depending on where you are, you can begin your car charge by plugging it in, using a contactless or RFID card, or by using an app.
Am I guaranteed an electric car parking space?
Not always. Most electric car parking spaces are on a first come, first served basis. You can use apps such as Zap-Map or Pod Point to see live data of which electric car charging points are in use before you arrive.
